The town of Hemel Hempstead is located Southwest of Stansted Airport a distance of around 50 miles a journey that would take around an hour by taxi via the M25. It is located in Hertfordshire and has a population of 81,143 according to the 2001 Census.

In Anglo-Saxon times it was called Hemel-Amstede and used to be an area of dense forest until the land was gradually cleared to use for settlements. After the Norman Conquest the town was given to Robert the Count of Mortain the elder half-brother of William the Conqueror. Until the Tudor times it was a rural hamlet and King Henry VIII had granted a charter to make Hemel a market town. After the Second World War due to the population growth of London, Hemel Hempstead became part of the post war programme and was transformed into a 'new town' to help with the overspill from London. This led to the town becoming part of the London Commuter Belt which has the benefits of being close to the city with the benefits of the surrounding countryside of the Chiltern Hills.

There are many things to do in Hemel Hempstead including a popular Town Centre and shopping street, the Old Bell Pub built in 1615, The Church of St Marys, Hemel Hemptead Old Town and The Museum of Technology.
